When we think of maps, we commonly think of communicating from point A to B. They also point out hot places for us visiting new places such as restaurants, malls, piers etc. Now where mapping and stuff becomes more politicized is voting and stereotypes. For example, for states in this country that vote predominantly red which is Republican is mainly Conservative views. The states that come up blue which represents Democrats which usually thinks Liberal. According to boredpanda.com, The stereotype examples Yanko use touch on everything from political concerns, like the development of the European Union, to cultural stereotypes, like the Hellenocentric view that Greece gave Europe its culture. The American stereotype map labels Russia as a communist stronghold, while Britain’s map labels Ireland as an island full of rascals.” That goes to show how much mapping has gone from strictly directional to stereo. What is also interesting is which places get more representation over the other. For example, about the bottom half of Manhattan with some places in Harlem being represented better than other places due to its nightlife, tourist attraction and historical lineage. As opposed to other neighborhoods that get a  bad rap. Margarita Gutman, New School professor told Next City during this week’s World Urban Forum 9, an event where optimistic visions of data-driven cities are on full display. “You will never know what is really happening in the bad parts of the city,” Which is interesting because of which places get glorified over the others because of what they provide.

Designing technology part 2- why are maps important ?

From my perspective I feel like maps play a crucial role in our activities that include having to travel from one destination to the next, it allows us to have a solid route to the destination saving us time and frustrations from getting lost or going the wrong way. Google has also taken things up a notch with allowing you to search a place and even provide extra information like a phone number, google reviews, and has a small checklist of common things people look for, it even gives you an estimated time of arrival, shows traffic, AND gives you different routes allowing you to choose the best one. Maps have allowed humans to get the luxury of convenience in terms of traveling from point A to point B and allowing us to know how long it will take , how far it is, and which is the fastest route.  The creation of a map is amazing but when we began to digitalize maps where we can access it from our devices is something we can learn to appreciate more !

Why are Maps Important

Maps are vital as they help us organize information and help us figure out where we are and where we want to go. Additionally, maps depict the real world on a much smaller scale. This, in turn, helps you travel from one location to another. For example, a street map will show you roads, their names, and various locations along those roads. In addition to the informative geographical information that maps provide, they can also teach us societal knowledge. The article “31 Maps Mocking National Stereotypes Around the World” was highly comical and borderline offensive. Nevertheless, it is a clear representation of how maps can unquestionably show societal stereotypes. In this case, we can see a multitude of maps and specific examples of continents and what Americans think about the countries within them. One example that stood out was “Asia accournding to the USA” and how it showed themes like “commies” referring to communist Russia and Japan being called “sushi ninjas.” These maps show a clear sense of prejudice ignorant views/attitudes we might have towards other counties. Nonetheless, the maps were trying to show us a solid visual representation of our own biases and what more transparent than a map.
Additionally, another reading I thought was interesting was “Reliance on Google Maps Street View Could Create an Urban Digital Divide.” It stated the vital role maps could play in figuring out U.S. socio-economic demographics by using features outside people’s houses. Furthermore, in a more considerable significance is the increasing relevance of policymaking. Maps are one component that can help regarding the overall institutional issues worldwide like economic disparity, waste consumption, or air pollution. A quote that stood out to me “What is not visible doesn’t exist, and if it doesn’t exist, we don’t have to take care of it” maps can provide those solutions to make the issue apparent and visible.
